Creating an inspiration file

I have a file on my computer where I put (links to) inspirational photo's from other photographers. It never occurred to me to make one of my own images. But as a part of my FYE course I was asked to make one of my own images. Selecting images that moved me, not the ones that were somehow appreciated by others.

So I started looking through my files going backwards in time. It's funny how I still remember all those images when seeing them again as my perception of my mind is that I really forget very easily. I went through them trying not to think to much just pick them. I ended up with some 30 images from the last 3 months and it occurred to me that I had published most of them on Flickr.

So do I publish what I really liked or did I pick the ones that I though worthy of publication? I tend to only "like" my photo's that are technically well done. Perhaps I focus to much on that? Looking through the files I remember that I took this one without thinking. I did not check my camera settings and it's cluttered with all kinds of stuff. But I keep coming back to it, I really like it, more than the other images in the file. This little cat, going off doing her own thing, walking away. I like the contrast in the image and the B&W. And this was one I did not publish probably because I thought it was not good enough.

There is one more image I kept coming back to. It's so delicate and light. I did publish this one and it is my second favorite from my inspirationfile.

As both a B&W that is a surprise to me. I thought I loved color and I do. All the other images are with a lot of color and that always is one of the attractive parts of the image for me.

But I love B&W in other peoples images as well. I feel as if I have taken a small step in identifying what feeds my soul, I am looking forward to the next step(s).

  1. Oh, I love this cat photo too. The use of black and white creates such a great silhouette! The delicate flower is gorgeous too, I love the translucence!

  2. I have to say that the flower photo is really, really stunning! I love how delicate it is and the monochromatic color scheme and the subtle texture. Actually, I love everything about it.

  3. Isn't this an interesting exercise? It makes you think about your photos in a different way. I like what you are finding. Both of these photos have a feeling to them, in different ways. I too like the cat photo, there is a story that comes through. The flower is gorgeous. I look forward to seeing where this class takes you!

  4. I just finished my file and really enjoyed the exercise. I haven't sat down to give thought to why/what I put in, I just put in. I too have a habit of being too technical so tried to follow my heart. The only thing that popped out was I seem to like windows. What's that about?
I really too am drawn to this cat image...I like that the cat is walking away-leaves me wondering where's he/she is going. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  5. Both images are so striking! A lot of elements work in the kitty image - the high contrast especially.

  6. What an interesting process this is. These are both lovely images and I too have been surprised at the BW images I love when if you asked me my preference is definitely for color.

  7. I love both of these images, but especially the airy-ness of the second image you posted here. I find that sometimes I feel the same - I love bright, fun colors, especially when one or two pop out against some neutral tones. But there are some of mine that I posted, as well as didn't post, that are black and white that I also realized I really love.
Based on these two images, you definitely have a talent for playing around with and using light and shadows. I really do love them both!
